How can measurement improve ramp up time in a new role?

Whether in a new entry-level role, a new manager role, or a new executive role, understanding the KPIs will help your early focus.

"Drinking from the firehose" describes most new roles. You're learning new terms (and acronyms), learning new people (and their roles), and maybe even learning where the coffee pot is. Reduce the firehose by learning who the customers are, and how the team measures success.

Data and metrics provide a common language that builds reciprocal trust. If you know your organization's priorities — the mission — KPIs allow you to understand the progress your organization is making toward meeting the goals that support that mission. They arm you with the data to have a clear, fact-based discussion about where things stand right now.

How can data help you achieve better results?

KPIs can spur insightful questions that lead to meaningful conversations and positive, mission-driven change. When you're new to a role, ask about the details of what you measure against, what success looks like based on those criteria, and what the current results are, then ask yourself questions like:

  • How do recent results align with what I want?
  • What else do I want to know about our process/ metrics/ output/ etc.?
  • Do I see how our current approach supports the mission?
  • Based on this information, are there any new (or adjusted) priorities I should support?

Opening a dialogue with your leaders and peers about where your organization is (and where they want to go) adds context that facilitates more informed decision making. It positions you as a strategic partner and a valuable asset in helping leadership successfully achieve their mission.
